Nimbus 2.0: a new name, a new look, and alerts that follow you
Avlo Weather is now Nimbus. 2.0 brings a sky that matches the weather, radar you can replay, optional sign-in, smarter rain alerts and air quality.
Avlo Weather has a new name: Nimbus, to sit alongside Focus. Same app, same data, same account. And 2.0 is the biggest update it has had. It’s in testing now, and here’s what’s in it.
The same design as Focus
Nimbus started the design system both our apps share, then stood still while Focus kept improving it. 2.0 catches up. You get the same calm greys, the same glass tab bar and the same six themes: Light, Paper, Dark, Dim, a true-black AMOLED, or follow your phone.
A sky that matches the weather
Today’s background now follows the conditions and the time of day: blue on a clear afternoon, slate under cloud, deep navy at night, warm around sunrise and sunset. Rain, snow and soft clouds drift across the top, and the whole sky fades away as you scroll down to the details.
The week got easier to read too. The type is bigger throughout, and each day’s temperature bar runs from cool blue to warm orange, with a dot on today’s for right now.
Sign in with Focus, if you like
Nimbus still works fully without an account. If you already use Focus, you can now sign in with the same account, and your saved places, units, notification settings and theme follow you to every device.
Alerts that follow you
Rain and pressure alerts are now for where you are, never your saved places. Allow location “Always” and they keep up even with the app closed. Your location is rounded to about a kilometre before it leaves your phone.
Rain alerts got smarter too: one heads-up per shower instead of one per day, at most three a day, and never a stale one arriving late.
In the US, severe watches and warnings from the National Weather Service now arrive as notifications, and warnings break through quiet hours. You choose how much you hear: warnings only, watches too, everything, or nothing.
In the app, each alert is now a card coloured by how serious it is (red for warnings, amber for watches, gold for advisories), with the time the hazard actually ends. Tap it for what to do, what to expect and where, laid out in plain sections instead of one block of bulletin text.
More on the Today screen
- Air quality, everywhere, with pollen across Europe.
- Compared with yesterday: “5° warmer than yesterday”, right under the temperature.
- Your cards, your order. Choose which cards appear on Today and rearrange them.
- Swipe between places right from Today.
- Units your way: inches or millimetres, inHg or millibars, 12 or 24 hour.
Radar you can replay
Press play to watch the last hour of rain move across the map, or drag along the timeline to any point in it.
Places as cards
Every saved place is now a card tinted by its own weather, so you can see which of your places is wet and which is clear before reading a word.
A widget that keeps up
Your widget now steps through the forecast hour by hour, even when you haven’t opened the app, and you choose which place it follows.
